WARDEN!

A Green Safety Tech for Today's Transportation Needs

A safe return home is the most basic assumption in every road trip plan.

WARDEN safeguards our roads, ensuring every single trip will end with a safe and happy return home.

Introducing WARDEN

WARDEN is an innovative one-of-it’s-kind mechanical device that eliminates jackknifing in articulated vehicles, preventing catastrophic highway accidents. WARDEN is a stand-alone assembly of multiple components that functions independently. Meaning, operation of WARDEN does not require contribution of any kind from any subsystem existing on a semi trailer truck (I.e. brake system, suspension system, exhaust system, transmission, engine, compressor, and the like).

Over the last three decades a handful of anti jackknifing systems have been designed, unfortunately none of them has been able to be successfully commercialized. Several factors have contributed to the failure of these designs.

All of them:

1.  One way or another, interfere with function of some of the most critical systems of the vehicle (air brake system, fifth wheel, drive axle, trailer axle, or even structure of trailer body). Every single one of these modification can compromise the integrity of whole transport vehicle.

2.  Require significant alteration on the structure of the truck and trailer

3.  Large and heavy (considerable amount of fuel needs to be consumed to carry the added weight)

4.  Complex

5.  Expensive

Attributes of WARDEN:

1.  Simple design

2.  Compact

3.  Requires NO alteration on either truck or trailer

4.  Operates independently

5.  Does not interfere with operation of any other system on the vehicle

6.  Low cost

7. Very light weight

While the technology is new and intended for the next generation of articulated vehicles, it can also, be easily retrofitted and operated on older commercial transport vehicles, already on the road.

What is Jackknifing?

Jackknifing in articulated vehicles refers to formation of acute angle between the towing unit and its trailer. Most of the time they involve multi-vehicle collisions as trailer penetrates adjacent lanes and engulf other vehicles around it.

There are two kinds of articulated vehicle jackknifing.

• Trailer Jackknife

Hard braking on a slick surface may cause the trailer brakes to lock and cause rear end of trailer to slide sideways (Trailer Swing).

• Tractor Jackknife

Performance of brakes directly effect magnitude of the compressive force from the kingpin of the trailer on the fifth wheel of the towing unit. When the articulation angle is not zero, the radial component of this force will create a moment that causes the towing vehicle to spin around its centre of gravity, consequently causing the existing articulation angle to increase. If the articulation angle passes the “point of no return” jackknifing will occur.

Regardless of their root cause, jackknifing is extremely dangers and most of the time fatal. This calls upon everybody involved in highway traffic safety to act now and make the semi trailer jackknifing a history.

In depth analysis of articulated vehicle jackknife has been presented in Solutions page.
